With Allies Like Israel - Who Needs Enemies?

Photo from Der Spiegel

Lebanese civilians, mostly children, fleeing the Isreali on-slaught.

Their faces - Hezbollah's future? Gee Thanks, Israel!

I believed for many years that the European Jews who survived the Holocaust would play a major roll in transforming a world constantly divided by wars of aggression to a world where nations tolerated one another and practiced peace. I thought that after experiencing the worst of ethnic hatred and being deprived of their human rights the survivors possessed unique insight that would help to create alternative methods to resolve human conflict. I was young, I was naive, I was disappointed, and I was very, very wrong.

Never did I imagine that Hitler's victims, who had suffered unimaginable horrors in Europe, would in turn, deny another group of people basic human rights, become as heavy-handed and authoritarian as the Nazis, form a militaristic, bullying state, resort to subterfuge, spy on the United States, take untold billions of American taxpayer dollars in welfare and weaponry, and shrug off the murder of innocents to advance their self-serving expansion. One would expect such hypocrisy of an enemy but from a supposed ally it is despicable. Israel's "OVERKILL" reaction to the kidnapping of two of it's soldiers screams for a reevaluation of the US/Israeli relationship. Israel's behavior toward the Palestinians and it's destruction of Lebanon and murder of it's citizens is Hitleresque.

I stopped supporting Israel when Israel stated bulldozing the homes and olive orchards of the Palestinians. I stopped supporting Israel when they started arresting and holding Palestinians indefinitely without charges and without the right to legal protections. I stopped supporting Israel as they grew more and more militaristic. I stopped suppporting the Israelis as they and their AIPAC counterparts in America embraced Likud extremism and lobbied my representatives for political favors, weapons, and endless financial handouts.

Although the Israelis have honed victimhood to the level of fine art, the propagandized myths about Israel are not true. Israel is not weak, is not militarily malnourished, and is NOT a democracy.
Israel's distorted form of democracy is based on religious superiority and draconian discrimination. A racist society that has ignored countless UN resolutions and committed hundreds of human rights violations against the Palestinian people, Israel does so with American financial support and blessings from American Zionists and Christian religious fanatics. The answer to the question, "Why do they hate us?", can be found in the Gaza Ghetto.

**********************************************************

To my elected representatives Senator Feinstein, Senator Boxer, and Rep. Duncan Hunter...

Don't send my husband's and my tax dollars to Israel - NOT ONE PENNY MORE!

We have homeless veteran's who have fought in the Iraq war living on the streets, Katrina's survivors need help rebuilding, millions of Americans go to bed hungry every night, especially the last week of each month, and millions of Americans do not have access to medical care. The standard of living for the average Israeli is higher than it is for the average American!

No More MONEY or WEAPONS! They are using our $ to wage WAR.
Send the bill and the body bags to somebody else!

***********************************************************

I couldn't write for days because I am sick to the bottom of my soul at the situation in Lebanon. I condemn Hezebollah for it's aggressive actions against Israel but cannot morally, ethically, or spiritually abide Israel's reprehensible, irresponsible punishing over-reaction. An ally Israel is NOT for they have chosen to drive their tanks over human rights, ignore American foreign policy concerns, and endanger the United States and her citizens. And shame on the American neoconservatives who are cheerleading Israel while trying to drag us into THEIR war.

Israel's neoconservative mouthpiece in America, William Kristol, claimed that this is "OUR" war. What demented, wishful thinking. The poor pampered preppie, who resembles some sicko's prized porcelain figurine, can't be expected to make decisions that require empathy or a concern for the human beings, who because of his efforts, will become "collateral damage". No, the very white, very superior, very porcelain Mr. Kristol sits well-protected on a high shelf. There is no danger of him mingling with anyone human.

Some of America's militants have been debating for days about whether Israel's war of aggression against Lebanon should be called WWIII, WWIV, or perhaps WWV. Newt Gingrich's declaration that "World WWIII has begun" is symptomatic of the premature ejaculation common among those suffering the advanced stages of Rabid Neoconservatism. I'm afraid that Newtie's ample bootie won't be parkin' in the Oval Office, for like Syphilis, Rabid Neoconservatism's final assualt destroys the human brain. It won't be long before Newt Gingrich is a goner.

Unfortunately, Israel's "short guy with a chip on his shoulder" combative style brings to mind the childish antics of Kim Jong Il. Both Israel and North Korea have proven that as nations they lack the maturity required to support sound judgement. Both have brandished their weaponry to intimidate their neighbors. Both behave like spoiled infants who scream if their demands are not immediately met. Both Israel and North Korea have nuclear weapons.

While the neocons argue that Iran and Syria supply Hezebollah and Hamas with weapons and money the United States plays the same game with Israel. The United States, Iran, and Syria should stop feeding cash and weapons "destructive to the masses" to the warring parties. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is at the root of this current nightmare and needs a workable human rights solution that does not involve a concrete wall.

I am heartbroken that the beautiful cosmopolitan Beirut lies dying. I am sickened that the children in the above photo were subjected to such horror and that, lacking bunkers, scores of others lie dead. Children should not die because grown men are peevish.

Weak men hide behind military might
............Kitchen Window Woman..........

P.S. I would like to acknowledge that hundreds of Israeli human rights and peace activists have been demonstrating against the current aggressive military actions of their government. Israel, like America, has had it's government taken over by extremist ideologues. My comments are directed to the diehard nationalist extremists.

I think most Israeli citizens are appalled at their government’s aggression (and our government’s constant funding of it). I sympathize with the civilians in both Israel and Lebanon — they’re just caught in the middle. I condemn Hamas and Hebzollah as well as the Israeli government, but those 2 groups aren’t funded by our tax dollars.

The Western Powers That Be created Israel. It was probably the same Powers that carved up Arabia in the early 1900s and created Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and several other countries. The Project For A New American Century (PNAC) only goes back to 1997, but their predecessors go back to the early 1900s. I suspect the carving up of the Middle East, the creation of Israel, and the funding for Israel’s constant aggression are all the work of the same shadowy Neocon organizations that have been manipulating American’s foreign policy for almost a century. When we get our current thugs out of Congress and the White House, these neocon groups should have a little less power than they do now.

Thank you for your column. I'm going to rally called by Jewish Voices for Peace against an AIPAC support for Israel rally today in Mercer Island, WA. We will have A 30-foot sign that says cut off aid to Israel. THIS IS NOT ABOUT RELIGION. It's about stopping genocide. Again, thanks for your column.

I think that this illuatrates perhaps better than anything I can think of the dangers that are inherent in organized religion.

Faith is fine-believe what you want. Organized religion is a menace and a poison. People trying to justify their behaviors in this world of ours by citing scriptures written thousands of years ago have demonstrated an appaling lack of understanding that as we learn, we change.

Organized religion is a menace and a poison.

While this agnostic isn't wild about religion, ultimately, I see it more as a matter of humanity's innate tribalism. Nothing rallies (and unites) a populace more than the sense of being under attack.

That's why you really can't bomb people into submission, "shock and awe" and all that, won't work. People don't just get mad; they get a thirst for revenge.

And endless cycle...

You're absolutely right, Pat... which is why I can totally understand Israel's response.

Hezbollah is targeting civilians, while Israel is targeting military targets (or infrastructure targets such as roads and bridges to keep Syria from resupplying Hezbollah.)

The 1200+ rockets Hezbollah has fired at Israel are inaccurate, often missing their targets by a half mile or more, and they are equipped with ball-bearing packed warheads. These are anti-civilian weapons! (http://www.newsmax.com/archives/

You may not agree with the politics of the conflict, but evil is readily apparent in the actions of Hezbollah. You don't negotiate with someone who specifically targets civilians... you defeat them.

Citing Newsmax for any point in any argument vaporizes the credibility of whoever tries it.

History teaches us one other thing that the yellow-magnet, yellow-backed crowd seems to have lost in all this history they want to try to cite for us over and over again-namely that if you adopt the tactics of those who you claim are evil, you are destined to lose. There are so few exceptions to this in history that it is almost irrelevant to try to find them.

You may not like that NewsMax is the source, but its still a first-hand account from Haifa (Kenneth Timmerman.) To dismiss facts just because you don't like the messenger is the height of stupidity.

But, JR did get something right... adopting the tactics of your enemy (in this case, intentionally targeting civilians) is usually a fatal mistake. Israel knows this - they also understand that it is Hezbollah that has delared war on them, not the people of Lebannon. To that end, the IDF is locating and attacking Hezbollah targets.

So why wouldn't we support an ally of ours in a struggle against a terrorist organization that intentionally targets civilians?

There is much more going on here than meets the eye. Israel seems to have been waiting for an excuse to root out Hezbollah. Now - I believe Hezbollah to be a terrorist organization - on par with Hamas; but Israel is going much too far. It is using a blow torch to kill a handful of flies. Too many Lebanese citizens are dying; and with the targeting of those UN observers - well; even if it was an accident - it looks suspicious. And I agree with your comments about how Israel has become that which it created itself to overcome. Now - I’m not one of those people who quibble with Israel’s right to exist. Its there. It should stay. But I believe Palestine should be there as well. There needs to be a cease-fire. Immediately. Before Bush did his best to hamstring the UN, it used to be effective in handling issues such as these. Not any longer. Since the US will no longer back any UN plays – anything Anan says is usually dismissed. You know - Beirut used to be called the Paris of the Middle East. Since the last war – it has become noting but ancient rubble; and I find that incomprehensibly sad.

The western powers that be did not 'create' Israel any more than Christopher Columbus created America.
If you would read your Bible, read Hamas' doctrine of intent, listen to Iran's president's intent, listen to Syria's rumblings of war, then look at America's paranoid reaction to 9/11 you may begin to get a feel as to why Israel tried to eliminate rocket launches cynically positioned in civilian areas of Lebanon in order to get the greater world reaction and sympathy when Israel attempted to defend itself.

THE TRUE STORY..

The person who wrote this article is abviously VERY ignorant and is probably married to some muslim guy who forced her to write this one sided article.

Its totally absurd! Denying human rights to Palestinians in Gaza? Didnt Israel already withdraw from that area months ago??

Also are u aware that the "economy in Gaza" was flourishing in the 1980's due to Palestinian - Israeli trade?? Soon after the Palestinian Intafada (holy war against israel) started as they thought violence would win them land! and obviously u know the outcome - Gaza looks like it does today..totally destroyed and in poverty thanks the PLO and Hamas' decision to go to war with Israel. Israel has closed the borders to Gaza to protect its own citizens - if thats what u mean by breaking human rights? then fine i can accept that and so can u!

Also the West isn't stupid..why do u think they support Israel 100%?? - Israel is the only country in the Middle East thats politically correct and fights islamic extremism and terrorism no matter what the cost to owns people! Thats heroic in my view..

Islamic terrorism is destroying our peaceful world - what other religion blows up innocent people in suicide attacks and then beleives the bomber will go to heaven after as reward?? Are u aware of Islamic laws against its own people... women are beaten by their husbands daily and not even allowed to show their face in public or even watch a football match in a crowd..and have u heard of the "honour killings" that occur in muslim families..killing their own family members?? these issues are the real breach of human rights!

Regarding the Israel-Lebanon War (JULY 2006) what Government in this entire world would allow a terrorist organisation like Hezbollah to attack its borders with rockets, kill half a dozen soldiers and not go to war for that? Israel has right to attack.. and Hezbollah used the Lebanese people as "human shields" so people like u and the media can critisize Israel's military for hurting civilians - its 100% clear no one in israel wanted to invade Lebanon ... Hezbollah started the war and dragged Lebanon and all the innocent people there into the fire line. Hezbollah is 100% to blame for the 1000 or more civilians who died on both sides and all the 1000's of homes lost in that month in N.Israel and S.Lebanon.

And guess what? even AFTER the war Lebanon is allowing Hezbollah to get more missiles and rockets from Syria.. maybe the Lebanese Govt does not mind starting another war with israel? What a shame..

Please open your eyes to whats really happening out there.

I really hope this helps to clear up a few issues that the article accidently forgot to mention.

Many thanks.

Hey ANON...
The west wallows and prizes its racest ignorance...my husband hails from Swedish, Scoth/Irish, English, and German background and thankfully thinks for himself and harbors no insecurities that would move him to force anything on any other human being. As far as Israel...CLUSTER BOMBS paid for by American working people, dropped on 750 Lebonese villages and the use of white phosporus....No way any EXCUSES for the grabbing of land and genocide against an entire people can ever be justified. Just another Con-Job where death is the result. I have no more sympathy left.
